Waterloo Job Shop
Fri 27 Nov 2009
As sole supplier to this NHS Foundation Trust for all Admin & Clerical job types, a relationship which is in its 5th year, we were a best placed avenue for local candidates to take after being out of work for a period of time.
This scheme is part of a wider initiative, through various Government organisations, to help people who have been out of work for long periods of time to get back into the work place. This approach is more proactive and driven with remarkable results.
Who it works for
The candidates that come through the scheme come from a wide and varied background; the scheme is specifically targeted in this case to communities in the Lambeth and Southwark Boroughs. In our capacity as an employment business we work with the Waterloo Job Shop to identify candidates who have been looking to get back into the work place. It all starts with that initial desire and commitment to earn again.
What happens next?
Once the applicants have taken this initial step and decided that the work place is where they want to be, through various sources, they approach the Job Shop. They then go through a detailed assessment and planning session. Each step is designed to work with and for the applicant in mind to identify the best possibilities so when a placement is arranged they have the best possible chance of success.
After this process, the applicant is put into a voluntary two week placement where they are given the chance to be introduced back into the work place. All going well, the applicant finds their balance again and a review is taken and feed back provided from the host department.
Where we come in
Once the candidate has a successful placement we are invited to register the candidate. Like all of Lifeline workers, the Waterloo Job Shop applicant goes through the same vetting and registration process. This includes a diarised appointment with a dedicated Recruitment Coordinator; upon arrival we invite the applicant to produce identification and proof of address. They go through various, but relevant, assessments so we have a better picture of their abilities, for instance their computer literacy. We then request all references from previous employers and take their feedback from their work placement. Once all paper work is completed and the references are back our compliance team signs the file off.
Back to work
The applicant is now ready to be considered for the various administrative positions we have coming in on a daily basis. Working closely with our key client in this geographical area we review which positions would be best suited for our back to work scheme candidates. In most cases we identify training needs such as further job specific computer training; we put the applicants through this training which can comprise of 3 modules which allows each candidate varying degrees of access to internal systems.
When trained and prepared we place the candidate in a longer term assignment and monitor through weekly check ups and day to day discussions. As this is now paid work, we process their timesheets on a weekly basis and deduct all relevant taxes and contributions. They are now fully fledged members of the Lifeline workforce, and a contributing member to their community.
On successful completion of assignments, where suitable positions are found, each candidate is provided a new one which will hopefully lead to long term satisfaction and career building opportunities.
